Digital marketing has been the all-time favorite marketing component for the last 5 years. It has tremendously helped entrepreneurs, content creators, and influencers to succeed online. By leveraging the trends, we can actually make use of digital marketing to build a brand and generate revenue.
But do you feel like you’ve been left behind in this race because you haven’t learned digital marketing?
Of course not! The ultimate guide on digital marketing for beginners can be your life-changing point because you’ll learn everything from the basics to get started with digital marketing (from Zero to Hero).
Can we start?
What is Digital Marketing?
Digital marketing, as its name suggests, involves using the internet or electronic devices to market a product or service in front of the right people (or interested audience).
Some of the basic digital marketing things we encounter in our everyday lives include:
- Visiting a website having great content
- Getting automated emails to our inboxes
- Seeing ads while watching YouTube or browsing sites
- and more…
Don’t worry, it’s not as technical as writing code or targeting people through their IP addresses. Digital marketing is simple, utilizing social media, websites, videos, or mobile platforms to offer people the products or services they are actively looking for.
Well, there’s more to discuss, but let’s cover some of the basic understanding of digital marketing.
Types of Digital Marketing for Beginners
Digital marketing is not short enough to cover in one article or book, it’s a very complex and long-term strategy to implement. Therefore, I am mentioning the main types of digital marketing for beginners (who want to start learning) to help you get the idea.
1. Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
Google loves great SEO. Yes, SEO is used to help your website or business rank higher on search engines (of course, Google) by optimizing your words in a format that allows Google to easily crawl and present it to the right audience.
If you’re reading this article coming from Google, it means I have done great SEO. Actually, SEO has two modes: on-page (front view) and off-page (behind the scenes) to rank your website or blog.
As a digital marketer, you have to work on both of these SEO types in order to rank higher on Google.
2. Content Marketing
Content is always the winner. Content marketing is a crucial component of digital marketing, as it means crafting content that people are looking for. For example, you search for shoes on Google, and you find an article that helps you choose shoes that are great for you.
Some of the things content marketing includes are keywords, research, your intention for writing, and most importantly, whether it is helpful.
3. Social Media Marketing
Social media is always on top, but why? It provides the maximum output for your digital marketing efforts. Well, there are two types of social media: paid and organic.
Organic social media can help you gain new fans, whereas paid social media can assist you or your business in achieving desired sales or revenue. Each type has its own benefits.
Social media also helps you build a personal brand. As you have seen, influencers have been booming for decades. Therefore, using social media in digital marketing is very crucial.
4. Email Marketing
Email marketing is found to be the highest-return and efficient way to conduct digital campaigns. Whether you are sending marketing emails, webinar links, or personal messages, email marketing is the best choice at all times.
Making use of your email list can be like crafting diamonds for your brand. Therefore, always pursue email marketing, especially if your budget is tight for your campaigns.
5. Paid Advertising
Advertising is a great way to get in front of your new audience if they aren’t connected with you. Also, advertising helps you in making sales for your products or services at very cheaper rates (than traditional marketing) using Facebook, Google, or any other social media.
Yet, advertising is complex and hard to implement, but it is always profit-oriented. You just need to be creative and smart to target the right audience.
From my perspective, a beginner in digital marketing should be learning the above important types and then explore more as they start understanding.
How Beginners Can Start Digital Marketing?
Just knowing concepts and creating a social media account isn’t digital marketing. If you really want to be a part of digital marketing, then you have to explore the strategies that can help you grow your followers or acquire new clients for your project.
Now, as you want to delve deep into digital marketing, my two options would be starting a website or building a personal brand on social media. But why?
Starting a website would help you in gaining knowledge of SEO, email marketing, content writing, and paid ads. This will help you understand the core fundamentals and set the metrics to rank your website and gain more traffic.
As a website is considered the front door to the online world, implementing digital marketing strategies into your website will provide you with clear insights into what’s working and what’s not. Another option is,
Starting your personal brand on YouTube or Instagram (generally on social media platforms) will help you understand the core strategies of organic video marketing and attract a new audience with your marketing efforts.
As influencer marketing (an ever-evolving part of digital marketing) is booming, and new creators are emerging in different industries, you, as a creator, can establish your own brand and start making money.
There are several more methods where you can start implementing digital marketing to gain a deep understanding and set a bright future. You can also explore these methods:
- Learn skills to start freelancing and serving clients internationally
- Join a company and start promoting through email marketing
- Engage with the community and share your experience
- And more (depends on you).
Starting your own personal project will definitely help you understand digital marketing as a beginner. Now, let’s look at some strategies…
Digital Marketing Strategy for Beginners
Let’s look at some secret strategies (I steal from top marketers) to gain a deep understanding and learn how you could actually become a digital marketing expert. This will help you learn faster and achieve quicker results.
1. Stick to One Niche At First
If you really want to succeed in digital marketing, one of the best ways is to pick one niche at the start and become an expert (it can be anything – SEO, Email, Paid Ads). When you start exploring one niche, people begin to find you trustworthy and are more likely to pay for your services.
This technique is what I’ve observed from most successful marketers. Actually, you cannot serve everyone; therefore, at the start, just focus on a small group, and you’ll be successful.
2. Use a T-shaped funnel
The T-shaped funnel is a technique that is somewhat similar to the above point, but it’s different in some ways. In this approach, you learn every aspect of digital marketing, but you choose one niche that you need to master (it could be any skill).
This will help you have an overall understanding of the industry so that you can make your efforts more impactful.
3. Look What You Love to Do
Learning or getting into digital marketing because it’s profitable or offers a better career than your degree is what you shouldn’t expect. Digital marketing is effective, but it takes a lot of time to establish your brand value.
Having a passion for this industry is the only option that can guarantee your success, no matter which niche you pick. You become a brand ambassador for that niche.
4. Find What’s Trending?
Digital marketing is profitable, but it’s also highly competitive (a crowded industry), which can slow your growth if you don’t select the right niche. So, what can a beginner do?
You can actually look for emerging trends in the digital marketing industry, such as:
- AI
- Voice Search
- E-commerce and so on…
Working with the latest and upcoming trends will definitely help you achieve quicker results. Be sure to check niches that align well with your passion and understanding.
5. Learn and Implement
One of the best things to be successful in any industry is to learn from top marketers and implement their strategies in your own marketing campaigns. Create your own personal project and gain a deep understanding of your niche.
